Tortuguero National Park is a must to all travelers in Costa Rica. Experts have identified 11 different habitats, 2000 plant species, 400 varieties of trees, 60 types of amphibians, 111 species of reptiles, 60 kinds of mammals and 30 species of freshwater fish. A large network of channels and lakes guide visitors through the heart of the jungle as monkeys, iguanas, aracarias, oropendolas, parrots and toucans fly overhead.
Bird watching is excellent as well, with more than 300 different species flying through the surrounding rainforest. Every year between the months of February and October, Tortuguero Park beaches areas are visited by the giant hawksbill, leatherback and green sea turtles to lay their eggs. The park is considered to be the most important nesting site of green turtles in the hemisphere. Visitors are welcome to observe this event along with the park rangers.
