About
CorcovadoConsidered by National Geographic magazine as “one of the most biologically intense place on Earth”, Corcovado is located on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica´s south pacific coast. Corcovado area in Costa Rica is home to the largest lowland tropical rainforest in the world with a plethora of endangered plant and animal species. One of the most important locations in Corcovado area is Puerto Jimenez, being the starting point location for most adventures to Corcovado National Park and Caño Island Biological Reserve.
One of the best ways for visitors to explore Corcovado in Costa Rica is to partake on one of the meals and tours pre-packaged programs offered by Visit Costa Rica Hotels while staying in one of the nature friendly lodging options in the Corcovado area. Corcovado is also ideal for a variety of activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving and sea kayaking.
Highlights
Corcovado National ParkBeing the most biologically diverse place on Earth, Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica is a sanctuary for more than 370 different species of birds, 500 species of trees, 140 mammals, 40 varieties of freshwater fish, 150 orchids, 120 reptiles and 6000 types of insects, all living in its 10,000 acres of land and 5,896 acres of surrounding ocean. Endangered species species such as jaguars, pumas, scarlet macaws, crocodiles, tapirs, poison-dart frogs, and golden toads find a safe haven within the nine different habitats in the park.
The biodiversity found in Corcovado can rarely be seen anywhere else in Costa Rica and the world, reason why the park is compared to a compact version of the Amazon. Majority of these wonders can be explored through an efficient trail system, taking you through rivers, mountains and beaches along with one of Visit Costa Rica Hotels experienced guides.
Caño Island Biological Reserve
Considered a biological and archeological jewel, Caño Island National Park is located on Costa Rica´s Pacific Ocean 15 miles away from Drake Bay in Corcovado area. Beautiful white sand and turquoise waters surround the island, although one of its major highlights lies in the sea and in the island forest. The island sea life living in an area of 5 coral reef platforms make it easy to spot mollusks, crustaceans, 10 ft. sharks, turtles, manta rays, eels, dolphins and an endless variety of colored fish. Scuba diving and snorkeling are available through Visit Costa Rica Hotels but regulated in order to protect the ecosystem.
Above the surface the island is home to a tropical forest which was used during Pre-Columbian times as a sacred burial place. Excavations at certain locations have revealed domestic artifacts, gold work and giant stone balls whose perfection arise unanswered questions from archeologists and tourist alike. Day expeditions can be arranged through Visit Costa Rica Hotels for snorkeling, scuba diving and to explore the island.
