Costa Rica is located in Central America, 10° north of the equator and 84° west of the prime meridian. The country stands as a border to both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, as well as bordering Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south.

With a population of approximately 4,254,000 habitants, Costa Rica actually covers a length of 51,100 sq. kilometers of which 50,600 sq. kilometers are land and 440 sq. kilometers is water, making it slightly smaller than West Virginia and similar to Denmark.  Being the nexus of two continents and two oceans, this confluence of water and land makes the region an amazing bridge with plentiful flora and fauna species.

The countries landscape is a coastal plain separated by rugged mountains. The country has a tropical climate, although in the mountains above 2000 meters much cooler temperatures prevail.

Both coastlines of Costa Rica have a wide variety of beautiful beaches. The inland areas are shaped by four mountain ranges running from north to south.

The capital city of San Jose, where over a third of the population resides, rests roughly in the nation center, settled within a highland valley. The pacific coast is marked by the Nicoya and Osa Peninsulas with similar shape but different size that hooks out into the Pacific.
